This is some straight up Terminator shit right here. San Francisco based artist Tanya Vlach, due to a traumatic car accident in 2005, lost one of her eyes. Like most people who have suffered a similar fate, she’s been wearing a prosthetic eye for the last couple of years. She’s now grown tired of the Sandy Duncan aesthetic and is interested in filling that empty socket with a webcam. Eyecam? If 20/20’s “nanny cam” style investigations has taught us anything, the technology exsists people. Some of the ideas/features being tossed around for development include: MPEG-4 compression, a built in microSD slot, A/V out, Firewire/USB drive, Bluetooth, DVR capabilities, sensors that respond to blinking enabling the camera to take still photos, zoom, focus and turn on and off. Where would the cords come out of and plug into? Who cares… this is freaking awesome! She’s gotten a lot of response too since posting a call to action on her website for engineers to build her a camera. She says, via her blog, that she’s “Interested in capitalizing on the current advancement of technology to enhance the abilities of my prosthesis for an augmented reality.” Looks like Reality TV might just might have some reality involved afterall. If the TV thing falls through Tanya (although how could it, it’s one of the most brilliant things I’ve herd in a while) you know there’s got to be, even if it’s relativly small, a subset of online porn just waiting to be tapped into.
