I’ll opening admit that I have little interest in horror films. Partly because most of them are poorly made, low budget train wrecks with bad acting, but mostly because I turn into a little girl when it comes to the ones that are really scary. The Shinning, The Exorcist, The Thing, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, The Silence of the Lambs, Nightmare on Elm Street—they all scared the shit out of me. If it’s not obvious by my points of reference I kinda gave up on horror films a while ago. I didn’t see Blair Witch Project and I’m ok with that. Point being I’m not trying to be a critic.
I had the opportunity to catch a screening of Paranormal Activity on the Paramount Studios lot last night. Everything I’ve heard so far about the film is that it was suppose to be the scariest shit ever. There were a few moments, but it really wasn’t that scary. And Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat, the two main stars, stumbled in the acting department (mainly Katie Featherston), but they had this odd dynamic that kinda carried them through. Neither will walk home with a trophy for their effort, though. Yet I’m not pissed that I went. There’s something rather appealing about being able to make a film for 15K in today’s world. And have it be something that everyone is talking about. For that I tip my hat to Oren Peli, the film’s director, writer and editor. So yea, I’d say go see it.
