Gotta say I’m pretty excited about this one. Jon Favreau absolutely killed it directing that first film — as far as comic book movies go, it would be almost impossible to beat his adaption of Iron Man. He nailed it in pitch, humor, characterization, everything. You can tell Favreau really knew the source material, which is integral in bringing a comic book to life successfully. Robert Downey Jr of course returns as Tony Stark, billionaire weapons dealer and world famous superhero, as does Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury — but this time not just a 20 second tease. In a preview to the upcoming Avengers (supposedly out in 2012), Scarlett Johansson debuts as Black Widow. Mickey Rourke (Whiplash) and Sam Rockwell (Justin Hammer) are introduced as the necessary evildoers. In this Iron Man, however, Don Cheadle replaces Terence Howard as Colonel James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes — only this time we see him as a full-fledged War Machine. (Rumor has it that Howard was replaced due to his difficult attitude on set of the original Iron Man, and that he was unwilling to take a paycut for a reduced role in the sequel.) I have faith this could be a winner.
Iron Man 2 hits screens on May 7, 2010.
