Maya Arulpragasam gets all freestyle on your ass

I seriously cannot figure out what everyone is smoking. I don’t care what the haters say, the new M.I.A. record is brilliant: the beats are sparce, complex, bad ass. I’m not sure — were people expecting 12 “Paper Planes” in a row? I can understand Perez Hilton, soccer moms and tweens that discovered her while watching Pineapple Express hating on it, but for actual music nerds the LP is legit — pure future beats courtesy of Rusko, Diplo, Switch, Blaqstarr and more. What more could you possibly need, world? If you find yourself disagreeing with this post, please go back to your soundsystem and play MAYA again — and no, not on laptop speakers either. After she melted the interwebs with her “Born Free” video (the most redundant song on MAYA, btw), she returns with one of her more accessible tracks, “XXXO”. I know a lotta fools hate on this track too, but I love it — the chorus reminds me of some classic ’80s freestyle action. I almost expect Exposé, Debbie Deb and Shannon to come riding tigers and swans onto the screen dressed head to toe in neon spandex (and the Hype Williams-directed video definitely doesn’t shy away from copious ’80s references). Keep ’em coming, Maya, we feel you…
