The secret world of Berlin's underground subculture

A peek into the art of train writing in Berlin, Unlike U: Trainwriting In Berlin tells the true behind-the-scenes story of underground graf writing in Berlin — specifically, their obsession with focusing on trains. Sure we’ve shown videos where kids bombed an entire train in 3 minutes (damn!),  but this documentary by Henrik Regel & Bjorn Birg is a much deeper look into the culture. As the film makers write, “What makes adolescents and even grown men want to spend the nights out? What makes them trick cameras, survey the guards and risk money penalties and even prison? What makes someone invest tons of money in spray cans without ever getting anything in return apart from some form of honor or appreciation from a very limited circle of people? … Extremely undercover. Extremely criminal. Extremely forbidden. UNLIKE U portrays four generations of sprayers in Berlin, of which the oldest of the hardcore artists is already over 40 years old, while the youngest are around 17. All protagonists have one thing in common. Each one has sprayed countless trains in their lives, some of them even over a 1000.” Unlike U has taken over 7 years to develop, and aims not to just be a graf-porn video of trainwriters doing their work, but an illuminating view into a very insular, secretive German subculture.
