Overpriced and corporatized racing in Fontucky isn’t your only option in SoCal this weekend if you’re a dedicated gearhead or profess to be a race fan. This weekend the dirty Global RallyCar Championship comes to the Toyota Speedway in Irwindale for two days of racing, both Friday and Saturday. Big names from the US and the world including Dave Mirra, Marcus Grönholm, Tanner Faust (from Top Gear USA), Rhys Millen, Marcus Dodd and others begin qualifiers on Friday for Saturday’s final events. Some call it “action sports with a roll cage” but it’s much more than that. Sure you could watch NASCAR make lefts all day on an oval track instead, but this competition will feature 50% dirt and 50% tarmac racing, and a level of control some say is greater than F1. Oh, and they’re also throwing in a huge 70-foot gap jump just for the thrill of it, implemented in competition for the first time in any motorsport outside of X Games. These guys are riding the cutting edge of the future of motorsports, and are all aiming for the big prize at the Summer X Games — and this weekend serves as the qualifier.
