When the Madman was not but a wee Mad Grommet, he stumbled across The Search For Animal Chin VHS tape and the world entered another era. That was my introduction to the Bones Brigade, and the Powell Peralta skate universe in general. Featuring all All Star roster of 80s skating talent — including Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, and Rodney Mullen — the Bones Brigade and its iconic imagery (like the Ripper seen above) became like a cult for anyone into skateboarding oh so long ago (can it be that it was all so simple then?). Now Stacy Peralta has put together a documentary of the era and his team, Bones Brigade: An Autobiography, with a central focus being the rivalry that developed between Tony Hawk and legendary skater Christian Hosoi. Peralta already produced the vaunted Z-Boys documentary and its accompanying feature film, so you know he’s got the right stuff to do the subject properly. The film’s currently screening at film festivals across the country, so keep an eye out for it or hit their website to check screenings worldwide.
