A quick word with disco compilation mastermind Sean Brosnan

We’re fireballing into the last month of summer; the sun’s shining brighter, the days are getting increasingly warm (and humid? What gives, Los Angeles?) and it’s more important than ever to get our heads in the game and take advantage of what the season has to offer: a ton of poolside parties with a ton of booze… and hopefully a raft, so you can booze while you pool. What’s even more important than summer activities is the soundtrack needed to participate in said activities. Luckily for us, Future Disco is making it easy to kick our summer into high-gear with the release of Poolside Sounds, a perfect disco/dance compilation featuring Yacht, The 2 Bears, The Rapture and more. We caught up with the dude behind Future Disco and Needwant Records, Sean Brosnan, and got to hear about his summer in Ibiza, what it’s like to be named iTunes “Dance Album of the Year”, and the one thing he can’t let go of…

Allow me to introduce myself, I’m…
Sean Brosnan or Future Disco as people sometimes call me, quite how I’ve become a genre is anyone’s guess.

You can find me usually posted up at…
By the pool in Ibiza.

You might’ve heard of me because…
I put together the Future Disco albums and parties.

My next order of business is…
I’m currently residing in Ibiza for the summer as resident for our Future Disco parties at Space.

If it wasn’t for _______ I wouldn’t be where I am today.
A serious over-exertion to dance music over the years.

The first piece of music I heard that I remember waking up my ears was…
Probably some 90’s dance compilation like Megabass on cassette tape. That sounds like a dubstep comp now but at the time it was all the latest pop dance in a megamix. For some reason even aged 11 or 12 I loved electronic music.

The last piece of music I heard that woke up my ears is…
I’ve been listening to demos all day for my label Needwant and there’s plenty keeping me awake tonight.

I hate to admit it, but I almost gave music up when…
I’m one of those people where I’ve never thought about giving it all up. It’s kind of with me for life, for better or worse.

But it all came together when…
I think when the second volume of Future Disco was named iTunes Dance Album of the Year. It was the first compilation I had put together and released on my own label and all self-funded, so to find out I had been named an Album of the Year among such great music that year was really one of the highlights professionally to date.

“I’ve never thought about giving it all up. Music is kind of with me for life, for better or worse…”

If I was taking a train from Paris to Madrid, the one person I’d want to share the cabin with would be…
I meet interesting people every day, so anyone will do, just as long as they have a story to tell.

If you want to put a smile on my face, you probably want to…
Just smile yourself.

If you want to wipe that smile away, then you should…
Ask me for a record that is as far as possible from the genre of music I’m playing.

The last time I saw the sun come up I was…
One of the last few days in Ibiza, waking up before sunrise (honest).

The person I admire most is…
The original explorers. We all think we are a little brave when turning up to new places but I can’t imagine what it must be like finding a completely new land, people, climates.

The last time I lied was because…
Yesterday I met some people who had been up for two days after Cocoon and DC10. We exchanged phone numbers to meet but really I didn’t want to. But how can you tell that to someone who isn’t really in the right place.

If you hit shuffle on my iPod you might be shocked to find…
Maybe folk and reggae; I love both genres.

If you hit shuffle on my iPod I’d be embarrassed if it landed on…
I’m not someone who is ashamed of my music, I don’t really care what others think too much.

When I get my next really big check, I’m gonna go score a…
Pionner CDj 2000’s — I love to play on these but don’t own any at home.

But it’ll never replace…
My Technics 1210’s , I can’t bare to sell them, even though I don’t really use them anymore.

My one magic power is…
Spinning plates. Lots of them.

I’d like to give a quick shout-out to…
The team at Needwant HQ, all the people that are partying with me this summer.

And lastly, If I was Lost In a Supermarket, you’d find me in the…
With the wine, I have a passion for red wine these days.
