Swedish automaker melds design with a sporting good company

Another coupe taking its dress off before the prom is Volvo‘s new XC Coupe. Although only two-door in design, the XC Coupe promises to be a crossover SUV with seating for four, and melds design cues Volvo is known for with notes taken from Swedish sporting goods company POC. Although the marriage is dubious, keep in mind Volvo has one foot in the bankruptcy grave, so who knows what strange bedfellows the Swedish automaker needs to make. “The Concept XC Coupe shows how clever engineering makes it possible for us to reinforce our world-leading safety without compromising design, size or weight,” Volvo’s head designer Thomas Ingenlath stated of its new crossover SUV. “Thanks to extensive use of high-strength boron steel and structures with new, ingenious decoupling we can make SPA cars more compact and safer at the same time.” Details on powertrain and performance remain nebulous — especially because it’s a concept vehicle — but perhaps more will be unveiled at next week’s NAIAS Detroit Auto Show.
