Getting Yasiin Bey back into the USA may not be so easy, but Amerigo Gazaway has done a hell of a job bringing “Yasiin Gaye” back to us. This Mos Def x Marvin Gaye is the sequel to the last dose of goodness you may remember from here. The intent this time around was to play up Marvin’s stylistic predisposition toward sample music, or as Amerigo himself put it:“I wanted to build this side from more of Marvin’s original production work. He was doing a lot of what we do now, in terms of looping and pulling samples from other pre-recorded sessions decades before hip-hop made it common practice to do so. This also gave me the room to feature other artists [Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Talib, etc.] and re-present those classic Mos [Def] verses in a new context.” Copyright-dodging cover art by Drew Dernavich, and detailed liner notes come with the album’s download.
