DIS magazine traveled to sunny Venice Beach, Echo Park and other hipster-swarmed Los Angeles locales to see what fashion trends were hot on the street. Except like a very disoriented and confused Bruno, DIS only seemed to run into completely fabricated trends — such as velcro and suction cup accessories to keep your wallet on you while shirtless, piercings displayed on the outside of clothing, garbage bag purses, bungee cord halter-tops, baby carrying bags, blindfold sunglasses and of course wifebeater swimsuits (above). A pretty clever commentary on the inanity and pervasiveness of fashion mongering, which admittedly LIAS is often guilty of. We’ve been fans of the work of the brothers Beckerman, Daniel and Simon, for awhile now (read our Q&A). The Milan-based duo first caught our eyes as the publishers of PIG magazine, but we also fiend on their eyewear line SUPER (aka Retrosuperfuture). For Summer 2010 they’ve dropped a couple new styles, including the “Cheetah” edition of their Luciano 3 Occhi frame, above. Handmade in Italy and featuring German-made ZEISS lenses, the Luciano 3 Occhi’s geometric yet classic design recalls the unique Italian style of engineering design, in particular that of the Futurista movement of the early 1900s. Is too much of Adriana Lima a bad thing? Sure we featured her in vol 10 of our esteemed Because We Love You series, but this seemed like a damn fine way to bring one of Brazil’s purest to our readers again. This time Lima bears it (almost) all for V magazine‘s Spain edition for “The Sexy Body Issue”. Fitting, even tho Lima just had a kid (way to make millions of until-recently-pregnant women across the world feel like crap, Adriana). Although this is for the Spanish cover, the regular UK V #55 will feature 4 other variations with scratch-off covers of models Natasha, Eniko, Lily, and Isabeli, all shot by Mario Sorrenti. Yes, scratch off, like a lotto card. Only 1000 copies of each girl will be available, and they go on sale July 4th. Happy Birthday, America!

This simple magazine strap reminds me of that chairless strap seat, only its made by the esteemed triumvirate of British magazine Monocle and Japanese labels Porter and B YOSHIDA. The olive, orange and navy blue canvas strap features a Monocle branded leather joining and Porter label. Sure the days of having 20 magazine subscriptions clogging your mailbox may be in the rear view, but this is an neatly organized way to take a couple of your favorites with you wherever you go. Photographs like that above always make me wonder: Is there such a thing as universal sexual appeal? What I mean is, I’m pretty sure every heterosexual male who sees the above photo gets a special stirring of the loins, even if they’re 95 and haven’t felt a stirring since the Reagan era. And I’ll pretty much take it for granted that every lesbian fits neatly in the former category as well. I’ll even venture so far as to say that most hetero girls would look at a pre-batshit crazy Anna Nicole Smith above and have a quick Girls Gone Wild-type imagery flash across their imaginations (nothing crazy, maybe just a peck and a little boob squeezing). So I guess all that leaves is gay men. Is it possible that a gay man can look at the photograph above and not be turned on, at all? What I mean to ask is, is it humanly possible to scan the image of a naked Anna Nicole, staring wantonly with back arched just so, and not have any sort of primal prefrontal cortex reaction? I can’t imagine it’s possible, but if it is I would take that as 100% undeniable proof that people don’t choose to be gay. Because I don’t think you can look at the above pic and elect not to be turned on in some way. You either are, or you aren’t — you can’t fight it either way (gay men, I welcome insightful comments below). But I digress. The whole point of the above pic is to note that Art & Artifact Gallery in Los Angeles will be unveiling an exclusive private Playboy Legacy Collection tonight which will run for two weeks. The exhibition will showcase some of the most celebrated and stunning images (published and unpublished) from the Playboy‘s archives, taken by some renowned photographers and personalities.

Featured photos include a brunette Marilyn Monroe taken in 1946 and as a blond in 1949, Ursula Andress from 1965, and Bettie Page lounging with a couple cheetahs from 1954. More recent images available for purchase include Stephanie Seymour, several Pamela Anderson pics shot by David LaChappelle, Dita Von Teese photographed by Marilyn Manson, and the above image of Anna Nicole Smith. Photographs by Salvador Dali, Michael Bay (booo!) and Spike Lee round out the exhibition. There is even a Playboy Legacy Box Set available, complete with the entire collection of forty-eight limited edition photographs and a companion book (images and books signed by Hugh Hefner, Charis, Pamela Anderson and Martha Smith also available).

You know we’re fans of the avant garde Visionaire Magazine, who always push themselves to evolve the format to the next level. Most of their work is so future-forward that the term “magazine” is a disservice, like Issue 57 (consisting of an electric calender with 365 different curated images) that we covered a couple months back. Well now the fashion/culture magazine is dedicating their next issue, 58, to late designer Alexander McQueen. Who knows what Visionaire will have up their sleeves for their “Spirit” issue, you’d think a tribute to Mr. McQueen would inspire them to some greatness, guess we’ll see. Mario Sorrenti, Steven Meisel, Lady Gaga, David Sims, Mario Testino, Sean Ellis, Nick Knight, Sebastian Faena, among others, also contribute to the issue. Can’t wait.

Following the success of their Oliver Spencer winter shirt range, Monocle has developed a summer version. It’s in the same classic Oxford design, limited to 60 shirts in each color — blue gingham or fine blue stripe. I’m personally feeling the gingham, but I just love that pattern. Certain magazines take the artform, flip it on its side, and then douse it in kerosene and blow the whole shit up. Visionaire magazine has redefined the format by making “issues” that were actually a set of vinyl that you played with a portable record player, and Gum magazine came packaged like a piñata filled with goodies like comics, View-Master reels, gumballs, etc. But quite possibly the most imaginative revision of the magazine has to be Madrid-based La Mas Bella — a  project that takes the idea of a magazine to the next level. Started in 1993 by Diego Ortiz and Pepe Murciego, they have gone on to produce over 30 magazines — all independently supported. Some past issues include 2003′s La Más Bella TU (The Most Beautiful YOU) whose monographic subject was the concept of “identity”. Formally the magazine was a typical wallet full of its typical contents (bank notes, ID cards, ID photographs, tickets…) recreated by different artists. And 2006′s La Más Bella Grandes Exitos (The Most Beatiful Greatest Hits), whose theme was “success”, consisted of a fabric groupy-bag with three pins, a Picture-Disc Vinyl Record, some vinyl disc covers, posters and a DVD. Now their latest clever issue, La Mas Bella Anda (The Most Beautiful Walk),  is packaged as a shoebox. Inside a sneaker, shoe horn, cellophane-wrapped stone (to place in the shoe and irritate your sole) and a feather for tickling your toes are included. But the most creative part is the series of specially commissioned artworks, which come in the form of illustrated insoles. How rad is that? Sure, nobody will know the artwork that you’re walking on, but something tells me just knowing in your mind how cool your feet are at that moment will make it all worthwhile.
