Available starting this morning, as in today, is Nom de Guerre’s revision of the classic Converse Skid Grip CVO canvas sneaker. Debuted in the early 1960s, the logo-less classic silhouette has done its time circulating with many a fringe scene, from tennis and boating socialites in its early days to surfers and new-waver in the 1980s. Nom de Guerre produced a short film directed by Zach Gold which features the shoe and other peeks at their upcoming FW10 collection, titled Countdown to Violence. The trailer can be seen below, or see the whole film starting today at Nom de Guerre’s flagship store in NYC. “Our approach to the Converse Skidgrip CVO shoe is also an exploration and study of uniforms, in particular. With Converse being a brand that has served as both a uniform and a statement of independence, we felt that it was an interesting juxtaposition,” explains Gold. NdG’s edition of the Skid Grip comes in jet-black rubberized cotton canvas, making it a little more sinister than the standard Converse Skid Grip CVO Cores. I would love to own some Common Projects shoes, but I have beef with their price points. Or rather, my wallet has beef with their price points. Their new Arctic Boot is no exception — the brown leather boots feature hiking-inspired lacing, a lightweight Vibram-like out sole, and Common Projects’ signature gold number-stamping. I would love to get my hands on some…if I only had $560 (€432).

Although I would never trade my collection of New Balance 576s for anything on earth, I’m very much liking New Balance’s new collection of court offerings. Coming straight from their vaults, the canvas Pro model includes a high-top/low-top combination and two basic colorways — white with bone and black on black. Both models feature a rubber toecap. Yesterday we brought you the Comme des Garcons Luxury Group Wallet Collection that hit Dover Street Market, and today it’s something else from the exclusive London boutique. Produced exclusively for Dover Street Market, Springcourt has designed this series of high top sneakers whose singular designs feature bold traditional Norwegian wool patterns. While there have been a handful of wool sneakers that have tickled my fancy over the years, the thickness and handcrafted look of these are especially eye-catching.

The always avant garde Rick Owens gives us a peek at some new looks from his forthcoming Spring/Summer 2011 DRKSHDW collection. While the line includes such head turners as leather gauntlets, drop-crotch pants and long flowing sleeveless robes, it is the leather high-top zippered sneakers with oversized tongues above that really underscore Owens’ future forward, rocker from the year 2025 aesthetic. I can’t imagine wearing them, but the look will not be forgotten.

As can be expected by his past shoes for his Adidas Originals by Originals Collection, Jeremy Scott’s latest creation continues the over-the-top aesthetics for Fall/Winter 2010. The new Leather Wings 2.0 white and black high top sneakers feature exaggerated Hermes-like (the god, not the luxury brand) wings that flare from the heel (instead of, say, a giant Mickey Mouse tongue or copious tassles). While too crazy for most to pull off, the Leather Wings 2.0 make a definite statement…what exactly that statement is is another question altogether…

Seeing as Native American prints have peaked in the streetwear game, you knew it wouldn’t take long before brands started venturing a bit further south of the border. Enter this latest iteration of Van’s slip-on, the “Guata Stripe”, which appropriates boldly colorful indigenous Guatemalan fabric patterns onto their classic silhouette. There’s a fine line between homage and exploitation, and I’m thinking this kind of veers haphazardly into the latter territory. But if you really need something to wear to that Mexican-themed frat party, pick them up for a sweatshop-low price of only $54.

There are few things more pleasing to a man than crisp clean gleaming white sneakers. It brings joy in ways that few things non-female related can. And there’s few things (non-female related) that can bring more anger and frustration than when that first drunken fool steps on them and soils their gleamy whiteness forever.
