The Nostalgic Landmarks, The Sexual Pensiveness—Everything They Do Is Full Of Personality.

Passarella-Death-Squad-(Danny-and-Emilie)-lo-res

A lot of designers have 1 or 2 great tee shirt designs in their collection, but not too many peeps consistently deliver season after season. Meet Danny Broddle of Passarella Death Squad fame. We’ve been tipping out hat to this man, and his creations, for a minute now. He, along with business partner Emilie Albisser, started the tee shirt line in 2004, and, in our humble opinion, haven’t delivered a questionable season since.

The nostalgic landmarks, the sexual pensiveness—everything they do is full of personality. You really get the sense that they’re not out there looking at what everyone else doing. They’ve since expanded the line to include classic cardigans, v-necks, and slacks with their first ready to wear collection launching in January 2010. Creativity doesn’t end with a sewing machine, though. There’s a music side of Passarella. Danny Broddle, Emilie Albisser and Kingsley Gratrick have been quietly making noise for a few years now, as well. Look for the 12-inch “Painted Yellow, Painted Black” and “Those are Sirens” via The Republic of Desire any time now. Their debut album is also due sometime soon. Have a listen to one of their live sets here.

Spot on designs aside, we really like how things came to be. Danny and Emilie met because they were each wearing a tee shirt they designed themselves and said shirts happened to look very similar. The music side came about when Danny was trying to get his Roland 303 to work and Kingsley offered to have a look at it, and in doing that they started talking about musical ideas and tastes and here we are today. There’s something distinctly original about Passarella Death Squad. With threw Danny a few questions, make the jump to read what he had to say….

What’s behind the name Passarella Death Squad?
It’s named after an Argentinean football player called Daniel Passarella. As for the ‘Death Squad’ part, I just thought it sounded good.

How do you both deal with creative differences?
Argue for a while.

There’s a dark, sexual and pensiveness thing going on.
It’s just a reflection on the kind of music and fashion we’re into ourselves.

How did you link up with Death In Vegas’ Tim Holmes? Is he the bands official engineer?
We met him after he and a person called Richard Clouston did a remix for us. He’s not the official engineer but he’s engineering our second album as well.

What role, if any, has music had on your design aesthetic?
I can honestly say without music I wouldn’t be doing fashion at all.

Do you find it hard to juggle music and fashion? Is one more important than the other?
Fashion right now is more important simply because it’s more successful, hopefully the music side of things will get a lot busier soon.

What song or movie quote best describes your philosophy on life?
I don’t have a philosophy on life.

What’s the most interesting place you’ve visited in the last 12 months and why?
Tokyo, always something interesting or unusual happening there.

If we pressed Shuffle on your iPod while you went to take shit, what would you be embarrassed to come back to us listening to?
Some of the 80’s hi-energy tracks might take some explaining.

Who are your top three musical style icons?
David Bowie “Low”
Grace Jones “Nightclubbing”
Debbie Harry “Heart of Glass”
