Planting Santa Cruz psych rock back on the map

Sleepy Sun, the fuzzed out, neo-psychedelic rock band from San Francisco (actually, from parts of California far-flung), is resuscitating a sound that hasn’t been quite the same since the transitional mid-70s, when peace signs were no longer cool, tie dye was forced to the back of the closet to make room for leathers and steel, and the cultural sounds faded from the mellower and optimistic tones of the hippy generation into Zeppelin big stage power channeling. Sure there’s some big riffage in Sleepy Sun’s world, but there’s also plenty of star-dusted dream psychedelia and the cross-harmonial wailings of singers Bret Constantino and Rachel Williams. They recently toured the US with the Arctic Monkeys, played with Autolux and Mudhoney, treated the Primavera and Treasure Island festivals, toured relentlessly, contributed to a Graham Nash tribute album and collaborated with U.N.K.L.E. for an upcoming single. And last week Sleepy Sun released Fever, their new and third album on ATP (pick it up at iTunes or Amazon). With a natural sound that could easily be mistaken for the soundtrack to one of the Dude’s mental trips in Big Lebowski, their music is as refreshing to the musical landscape as all-natural hippy energy drinks are to them. Check out Sleepy Sun’s “Open Eyes” video below. Summer tour dates after the Jump…
