The Eternal Summers are a duo of hazy-minded musicians emerging from the forests of Roanoke, Virginia, eager to share their dream punk to whoever can bring their music to the world at hand. Comprised of singer/guitarist Yun and drummer Daniel Cundiff, the inverted White Stripes duo are both members of the Magic Twig Community, “a collective of nine like-minded musicians that cherish boundless creativity and weirdo indie pop.” Which is apt, because that’s exactly what Eternal Summers play. Mixing surf guitar rhythms with hazy melodies, the band’s quick-punch 2-minute tracks run the gamut from upbeat blissed out stoner rock to slower tempo low-fi pop. Eternal Summers spent the past fall and winter touring the east coast and midwest with the likes of Harlem, Dum Dum Girls, Best Coast, Dan Deacon, Beach Fossils, Jenny and Johnny and Wild Nothing. And now, to support their recent Prisoner EP (Forest Family/Kanine Records), the band kicks off another tour next week (May 18th, Cleveland, OH) with a bunch of dates in the midwest before tackling the west coast at the end of the month — which marks the Eternal Summers first trip out west. Check out tour dates after the Jump, watch the “Safe At Home” video and read our Q&A with drummer Daniel Cundiff below…
Allow me to introduce myself, my name is…
Daniel and I play drums in Eternal Summers
You can find me…
Riding my bike through Roanoke, Virginia. It’s an old railroad town. Pretty mellow here.
I’m usually hanging out at…
The Mystic Fortress a.k.a. the Space. That’s where my friends and I play music, record, goof off and act serious.
I pay my bills by…
Well, I don’t really pay my bills. My job is working at a frame shop and try using the money from that to live off of as much as possible. Music helps a little tiny bit.
You might’ve heard of me because…
My band Eternal Summers released our debut album Silver on Kanine Records. Also we just released our four song E.P. “Prisoner” on Forest Family/Kanine. I also play in a few other bands like The Young Sinclairs.
Hit the Jump for upcoming tour dates, another video (“Pogo”), and to continue our Q&A with Eternal Summers drummer Daniel Cundiff…

“My dad Rodney’s a super level dude with a heart of gold. He can shoot you with an arrow from 100 yards away, gut you, and drag you out of the woods. He’s a truly great man.”
Our next order of business is…
After the release of our new E.P. is to play MACrOCk in Virginia, a few shows in D.C. and Baltimore with Cloudnothings. Then in May and June we’ll be doing our first US tour with our buds the BEETS.
If it wasn’t for…
The Magic Twig Community I wouldn’t be where I am today.
The best part about my job is…
When it’s over.
The worst part about my job is…
When it begins.
If I was taking a train from Paris to Madrid, and I could choose one person to share the cabin with, I’d choose…
My friend Paige from The Sad Cobras or my buddy Sean Poff.
The first piece of music I heard that I remember waking up my ears was…
A few numbers. They all affected me in the same way. They made me feel that what they were saying was important and very heavy. John Lennon: “Imagine”, Dizzy Gillespie: “What A Wonderful World”, Tears For Fears: “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, Cyndi Lauper: “Time After Time”. From Annie the Soundtrack: “It’s a Hard Knock Life”. All those songs I heard very young and I never forgot the moment I heard them. They are still some of the most amazing songs I have ever heard and still impact me heavily.
The last piece of music I heard that woke up my ears…
That’s a tough one in comparison. Nowadays I enjoy modern bands like Dungen, Reading Rainbow, Family Trees, Sleep Over, Radio Dept., and Ariel Pink. I listen to a lot of older music. I’m a big Grateful Dead fan. I recently got turned on the Wipers from buds Rob and Sarah. I love Steely Dan and New Order, Neil Young and Nirvana. Music is an infinite evolving quest.
If you want to put a smile on my face, you probably want to…
Put Spinal Tap on the tube.
If you want to wipe that smile away, then you should…
Punch me.
Eternal Summers Prisoner EP…
The last time I saw the sun come up I was…
Probably having a special moment laying in the fields of the dying Summer waiting for the golden feather of Fall to shine.
The person I admire most is…
My dad, Rodney. He’s a super level dude with a heart of gold and he can shoot you with an arrow from 100 yards away. Gut you, and drag you out of the woods. He is truly a great man.
The last time I lied was because…
I had to fill out this interview. But not really.
If you hit shuffle on my iPod you might be shocked to find…
Everything is good.
If you hit shuffle on my iPod I’d be embarrassed if it landed on…
The ground, for you.
When I get my first really big check, I’m gonna go score…
A nice meal with some friends and get some new drum sticks and go shopping at The Bazaar in Roanoke, VA.
But it’ll never replace…
My Spinal Tap DVD.
My one magic power is…
To control plant growth and manipulate plants. I could be called Ra-Na or something silly like The Gardener. I like comics. Just got into the Watchmen.
I’d like to give a quick shout-out to:
Paige, Sam, Nicole, John, Woods, Air, Sean P. and everyone who makes something out of nothing or something out of trash.
And lastly, If I was Lost In a Supermarket, you’d find me…
In the Produce aisle.
