Gearheads worldwide, accept the awful truth: the future of the V12 (and many think the V8, as well) is in peril. Its glory days are numbered. As we head towards greater efficiency regulations (nevermind dreaded Peak Oil), cars humming around under the power of a mighty gas-guzzling V12 will become scarcer and scarcer. As can be witnessed by Bentley announcing the V8 version of their mighty Continental GT — which was normally only available with the 6.0L, 631 bhp W12 lump. The Bentley Continental GT V8 will be powered by a new twin-turbo 4.0L V8 boasting a very respectable 500 bhp, enough to offer a 0-60 click in under 5 seconds and a top speed over 180 mph. Although it loses 131 bhps from its most powerful version of the W12, the V8 variant also notches a 40% improvement in fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions and achieves a range of over 500 miles on a single tank of gas. Pretty amazing for a 5,500 lb Bentley. Cosmetically, the Continental GT V8 will features an exclusive gloss black matrix grille and red enamel Bentley winged ‘B’ badges so you know it’s the V8 version. The luxury grand tourer will make its debut this January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
