You hear plenty about new DJ’s and producers coming out of the UK, Europe and right here on our own turf of the USA (not to mention the handful of producers representing our own City Of Angles), but what about our lovely neighbors down south? The male duo Climbers (Jay Blakk and Kiko Deal) is here to put their home country of Mexico on the map for house music in its most dark, sinister incarnation. Currently signed to Culprit, Climbers just released their second EP 2 Come Back and spent a moment talking shop as they embark on their first European tour. Read our interview below, and peep the video to the title track off 2 Come Back below…

Allow me to introduce myself, I’m…
Jay Blakk and Kiko Deal aka Climbers.

You can find me _____, usually posted up at …
Mexicali – Mexico.

You might’ve heard of me because…
We are two guys making music for Culprit and other labels, and having some studio-fun in Mexico.

But why you really should know me is…
The people behind Climbers enjoy life so much.

My next order of business is…
Right now we are having so much fun on our first European tour, its been incredible the warm welcome we received and how people love to dance and have a good time. Also we are working on some remixes that we are super excited about so everything is really good. Our second EP for Culprit ‘2 Come Back’ is out now!

If it wasn’t for _______ I wouldn’t be where I am today
Well we have to say our families for sure and friends, but also i think the willingness to take chances and not be afraid, to take a step and go for it. We also need to acknowledge our first EP for Culprit The Laws of Attraction’ which will always be important to us, and helped launch our careers. And of course all the great artists that have been so supportive since day 1. Thanks.

The first piece of music I heard that I remember waking up my ears was…
Kiko Deal- Michael Jackson – “Dangerous”
Jay Blakk- Stone Temple Pilots- “Plush”

The last piece of music I heard that woke up my ears is…
Kiko Deal- “Summertime Sadness” – Lana Del Rey
Jay Blakk- “Skinny Love” – Bon Iver

I hate to admit it, but I almost gave music up when…
Kiko Deal- Many times that thought came to mind but I think the time that was the hardest was when I spent all my savings to produce an álbum with my band. I showed it to many different records label, and at the end just one record label said that they would contact us, but they never did. But now I’m happy that the pieces are finally coming together.

Jay Blakk- For me was when I started to see that I wasn’t going anywhere with my productions and I was kind of sick of all the crap that was happening on the local scene so much ego. But like Kiko said I’m so glad that the pieces came together, and that I can share this dream with my brother from another mother, there’s no better way to do it.

But it all came together when…
Kiko Deal- For me I think coming to Europe for our first ever trip here and doing it because of music, its like a reflection of all the hard years working towards a goal. I remember that when we were told that the tour was going to happen it was a special moment. But the one that will be forever in my memory is when Jay and I were outside my house one day drinking some beers after finishing one track and we started to talk about the tour and how wonderful that would be at that moment it really hit me that my dreams were becoming reality.

Jay Blakk- I remember the same as Kiko, but for me day 1 was a major triumph because I remember we were sitting on the couch of my house and just saying to each other that we will retire of music. I told Kiko that before that we should make one track together just so that when we would grow older it would be fun to have that track we made. He immediately said yes, so I came to his house and in one week we finished 3 or 4 tracks and we thought we might have something here. I still remember telling to Kiko let’s send the music to Culprit because we love the label and when they told us that they were signing our first ever EP we were so happy, but with a feeling of gratitude to life for giving us a second chance.

“When Culprit told us that they were signing our first ever EP we were so happy, but with a feeling of gratitude to life for giving us a second chance…”

If I was taking a train from Paris to Madrid, the one person I’d want to share the cabin with would be….
Kiko- I could not say one, but rather any great friend of mine because that way I could chat with that person about anything.

Jay Blakk- For me would be Einstein, because I’m intrigued by how he saw life in general.

If you want to put a smile on my face, you probably want to…
Kiko Deal- Make a joke
Jay Blakk- Be yourself

If you want to wipe that smile away, then you should…
Kiko Deal- Kick my ass
Jay Blakk- Be sarcastic

The last time I saw the sun come up I was…
Kiko Deal- After party! jaja
Jay Blakk- After Party lol

The person I admire most is…
Kiko Deal- My mom.
Jay Blakk- My parents and brothers.

The last time I lied was because…
Kiko Deal- I had no other chance.
Jay Blakk- To avoid a confrontation.

If you hit shuffle on my iPod you might be shocked to find…
Kiko Deal- Britney Spears.
Jay Blakk- Boy George.

If you hit shuffle on my iPod I’d be embarrassed if it landed on…
Kiko Deal- Commercial hip hop.
Jay Blakk- The Offspring – “Pretty Fly”

When I get my next (first?) really big check, I’m gonna go score a…
Kiko Deal- A decent studio.
Jay Blakk- Yeah a decent studio please!!!

But it’ll never replace…
Kiko Deal- My wallet.
Jay Blakk- My collection of football cards

My one magic power is…
Kiko Deal- Making music.
Jay Blakk- Feel the vibes of people. muaahhhh!

I’d like to give a quick shout-out to…
Yeah we just want to say to everybody that is reading this, first thanks for your time and second to all the ones that are in our hometown we miss you guys.

And lastly, If I was Lost In a Supermarket, you’d find me in the…

Just want to say, besides putting out fantastic original production on Culprit, Climbers made some of the best mixes I’ve heard all year long. Look them up! Thanks to LIAS for the interview, looking forward to catch them in LA hopefully soon and thanks for all the good music guys!
