As The Guardian reports, director Steve Loveridge has just quit his long ongoing documentary about M.I.A. due to funding problems— enough to prompt the Sri Lankan/London rabblerouser to suggest a Kickstarter to keep the project going. Yesterday, the erstwhile director resorted to his own Tumblr page to release a teaser for the movie, instructing viewers to “reblog the shit out of [it]” while also telling M.I.A.’s label XL to “wake up”. The trailer is pitch-perfect M.I.A., adroitly blending her terrorist ties with her global bass sound to form a story custom made for controversy. Brief interview clips can be seen by a wide spread gamut of artists and executives such as Diplo, Kanye West, Spike Jonze, Jimmy Iovine, Switch and Richard Russell. Just watch the 5-minute trailer below and you’ll have a good idea of what you can look forward to — and whether it’s just more shameless self-promotion from Maya or a legit look into her history, it’s sure to be a compelling, illuminating look into the life of one of the most interesting pop stars on the planet…
