We were lucky enough to be at Pebble Beach this weekend when Cadillac unveiled its latest design study, the Elmiraj. Well it wasn’t actually at the Concours d’Elegance at Pebble, but rather at the renowned Tehama Golf Club a couple nights prior — but you get the point. Overlooking the gorgeous dusk-washed Carmel Valley, the good folks at GM took off the sheets to their latest concept: a massive 2-door executive sedan coupé. The Elmiraj is frankly stunning, and yet another positive step in Cadillac’s ongoing ascension to world class luxury. Beginning with the CTS (and its potent CTS-V counterpart), and moving onto the North American Car of the Year winner ATS, Caddy is quickly catching up to Ze Germans and taking the luxury war to their doorstep. The Elmiraj is most definitely a power move, claiming a 500-horsepower 4.5L twin-turbo V8 bristling with 500lb-ft of torque. It sits on 22-inch wheels loaded with ceramic brakes, and features an interior few can match — although in fairness, it is a concept. The interior is driver-focused, meaning all instrumentation is aimed towards the left seat, while the rest of the car is made to pleasure the passenger — including an interior washed in Brazilian Rosewood trim, buttery camel leather and titanium accents. No wonder we saw Clint Eastwood walking around the car checking it out; the Elmiraj is impossible to ignore. While many are reporting the Elmiraj is simply a design statement, word from anonymous Cadillac executives is that it is very much in talks of being developed. Right now the luxury brand is missing a potent, rear-wheeled drive sedan coupé to compete with top-level executive sedans like the A8, 7-Series and S-Class, and GM is certainly hoping the Elmiraj will be that car. Of course we weren’t allowed to drive it or anything — we pretty much just looked at it and gasped at its beautiful linework. No wonder Clint couldn’t stay away. More news as it develops, until then just enjoy the car below…
