South Carolina has never been renowned as a hotbed of musical talent, and that serves Chaz Bundick, aka Toro Y Moi , just fine. After graduating last spring from the University of South Carolina, the 23-year old Columbia native retired to his bedroom studio and decided to meld his brain to his studio gear. With heavy doses of Animal Collective and Sonic Youth sprinkled with touches of Memory Tapes and YPPAH, Toro Y Moi casts a pretty wide sonic net. But best thing to do is just peep his track “Blessa” below — the kid is good.
Toro Y Moi’s Causers of This LP is out February 2, 2010 on Carpark Records. Hit the Jump to read his interview and see the video for “Blessa”…
Allow me to introduce myself, I’m…
I’m Chaz and I like to go by Toro y Moi
You can find me…
Columbia, South Carolina.
I’m usually posted up at…
My room.
I pay my bills by…
Awkwardly playing music in front of people…
You might’ve heard of me because…
I have an album coming out soon, or it may be out already depending on when you read this.
My next order of business is…
Finishing the 2nd album for 2010.
If it wasn’t for _______ I wouldn’t be where I am today.
The internet.
The best part about my job is…
That I get to do what I love.
The worst part about my job is…
How tiring it is.
If you want to put a smile on my face, you probably want to…
Show me new music
If you want to wipe that smile away, then you should…
Stare at me like you hate me or something, and make that face that’s like, “ew” or “I think he’s like southern or sumthin…”
The last time I saw the sun come up I was…
I think it was in Brooklyn, for a loft party. But, who knows…
The person I admire most is…
My dad.
The last time I lied was because…
5 minutes ago, I didn’t want to be somewhere.
If you hit shuffle on my iPod you might be shocked to find…
Dave Matthew’s Crash! In the words of Kanye, “Listen to this shit. It’s good.”
If you hit shuffle on my iPod I’d be embarrassed if it landed on…
Toro y Moi…maybe.
When I get my first really big check, I’m gonna go score a…
A lease for my own apartment.
But it’ll never replace…
My bed probably — it has drawers connected to it and it saves space.
I’d like to give a quick shout-out to…
Free Kisses, Coma Cinema, The Choir Quit, Ernest, and SpinaDoodles.com
And lastly, If I was Lost In a Supermarket, you’d find me in the…
The dairy aisle…cheese please.
