One of the most headturning vehicles in a sea of headturning European unveilings at this week’s Geneva Motor Show is this latest concept from Alfa Romeo. In collaboration with Milano race specialists Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, the Disco Volante 2012 is a modern interpretation of the brand’s iconic 1952 Disco Volante (aka “Flying Saucer”), which is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The original car earned the “Flying Saucer” moniker due to its futuristic design and ultra aerodynamic silhouette, and the modern interpretation succeeds in doing the same. Built on the chassis of the peerless Alfa 8C Competizione — one of the most beautiful cars of the decade — the Disco Volante 2012 manages to shed considerable weight due to an aluminum and carbon fiber body. Like the 2-seater its built on, the Disco Volante 2012 uses a 4.7L V8 engine mated to a six-speed automatic with paddle-shift, allowing a 186mph (300km/hr) top speed. Alfa Romeo and Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera plan to release the Disco Volante 2012 in a very limited production, although its not one of the rumored Alfa Romeos to usher the return of the vaunted Italian marque to U.S. shores.
