Yesterday it was the Aston Martin V12 Zagato tribute, and today it’s BMW’s turn to play their homage card. Their new 328 Hommage was crafted to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of BMW’s watershed 328 line, the sports coupé that helped define the Bavarian Motor Works very brand. Similar to the go-kart like Weismann Spyder Concept in that weight is placed at a premium (as was the case with the racetrack-engineered original 328), the 328 Hommage is ridiculously light thanks mostly to the use of copious carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) — a high-strength fiber fabric both lighter and more stable than aluminium. Also like the Weismann Spyder, the 328 Hommage lacks doors. The result of all this fat shaving is a track ready two-door roadster that weighs in at an Allesandra Ambrosio-like 1,720 pounds. Paired up with the 3.0L six-cylinder engine the concept figures to have a superlative power-to-weight ration. But unlike the Weismann, luxury was not left unattended: the Hommage features an interior flush with soft saddle tan leather, matte and high-gloss black polished aluminium. Its instrument panel even comes fitted with two iPhones that assume additional display functions (stopwatch, GPS, etc) housed in special high-grade aluminium holders. The exterior is just as dramatic as the interior: its taut, strong wedge shape is complimented by large alloy wheels with 328-signature hole pattern, all culminating in the iconic vertically positioned double kidney grille — perhaps the sharpest echo of its legendary original.
