America's ultimate supercar gets ultimate American lines

For the past decade America’s lone supercar manufacturer Shelby Supercars (SSC) has been duking it out with Bugatti for title of World’s Fastest Production Car. As soon as one manufacturer would announce a new tweak to the engine or carbon fiber swapout, the other would announce their tune-up in a rapidfire press release. But one thing the SSC Ultimate Aero never had over its Veyron nemesis was its design: even if you’re one of many who hated on Bugatti’s low slung mouse-meets-paintscraper looks, one could never deny its uniqueness. You simply could never confuse a Veyron with any other supercar. The Ultimate Aero? Not so much. Praise for its lines ran from “mundane” to “derivative” to “supercar-esque”. That’s why the Washington-based SSC put such a premium on aesthetics for its latest top secret supercar, coyly codenamed Next Generation by the boys over at SSC — and why it was such a buzzworthy news item when SSC announced that American Jason Castriota would be penning it. Known for such pivotal concept car designs as the Maserati Birdcage, Bertone Mantide, Pininfarina P4/5 and the Rolls-Royce Hyperion, Castriota cut his teeth designing for high-powered Italian studios Pininfarina and Bertone. And while its exterior was unveiled months ago — including the use of copious exposed carbon fiber in the grill, headlamp louvers, mirrors and lower body panels, as well as the world’s first one-piece carbon fiber wheels — finally some details about the 2012 Next Generation supercar’s actual engineering are being divulged: similar to its predecessor the Ultimate Aero, the Next Generation supercar will be powered by a twin-turbo V8 (sourced from GM’s Corvette), except this time the V8 will generate an incredible 1350 horsepower, topping off at a projected 275 mph top speed. The American designed, American engineered, American powered Next Generation will be produced in very limited supply, with a pricetag of $970,000. Your serve, Bugatti…
