To me, there are no better filmmakers than the Coen Brothers. Sure, there are a handful of people at their echelon, but when Joel and Ethan are at the top of their game they are simply unbeatable. Hence Barton Fink, Fargo, Raising Arizona, Big Lebowski and the jaw-dropping No Country for Old Men. Pure cinematic virtuosity. They are also among the most erratic, unafraid to release product that is far below their top fare (Burn After Reading, Intolerable Cruelty and Hudsucker Proxy, I’m looking in your direction!). So really, you never know what you’re gonna get when you step inside a theater to see a new Coen flick. Here’s the trailer for their latest, A Serious Man, which honestly looks like it could go either way..although it does seem to fit in squarely with their long running and trustworthy Good-Man-Really-Really-Really-Really-Down-On-His-Luck theme.
The most remarkable thing about the trailer is the end, where they feel the need to list the Coen Brothers’ movies. Really? Is there anyone out there who doesn’t know what the brothers have done? I guess you never know…
