Today’s stale pseudo-celebutard Hollywood clubs and inpersonal massive corporate candy raves leave the sophisticated Angeleno music lover, like myself, yearning for a simpler time — aka the 90s. The warehouses were plentiful, the drugs were clean, the soundsystems went 8am strong and the energy was lucid and pure. And what there wasn’t was just as important as what there was: no cops, no junior high kids, no VIP guestlist, no pretense. It was the birth of a new culture that spawned the juggernaut that is the dance music scene in LA today (where would you be without it, Aoki and AM?). Lucky for us Angelenos, LA has once again given birth to a new generation of aficionados, one that’s rooted in music enjoyed at its purest. A drive downtown on any given Saturday nite thru a maze of warehouses, and you just might find that megawatt soundsystem amplifying those tracks you’ve always wanted to hear anywhere but on your tinny desktop speakers. Whether it’s black disco or dubstep, LA’s is once again proud to boast a solid underground dance scen — perhaps America’s best.
