Midnight Juggernauts‘ Dystopia was one of the best albums of 2007, taking dance music exactly where it needed to go — elevated from the brainless serotonin backwash of 4/4 monotony to the edge of, dare I say it, prog. Part Pink Floyd psychedelia, part Ennio Morricone paranoid dreamscape, part disco synth fancy, Melbourne’s Midnight Juggernauts were the standout “electronic” group of recent memory — opening the floodgates for more accessible fare like Emperor of the Sun and even MGMT.
“This New Technology”, the first track off their upcoming sophomore album was released today through iTunes (Acephale Records) along with remixes by CFCF, Babe Rainbow, and Emperor Machine, with “Fantastic Valleys” on the B side. The video below was directed by New Zealand design collective Special Problems, which is cool of the Juggernauts to do considering the well-known competitive animosity between the Kiwis and Aussies.
They will be playing several dates in NYC and one in LA this month (tour dates after the Jump) before heading back to Australia for a national headline tour by across Perth, Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong, Melbourne, Frankston, Brisbane, Canberra, and Adelaide. Catch ’em if you can…
