Ninja Tune artist Antibalas (aka Martín Perna) and partner Adrian Quesada (of Grupo Fantasma ) are the latin funk and afrosoul wonder that is Ocote Soul Sounds. The duo are releasing today a deluxe re-issue of their third LP, Coconut Rock, which was released in June on ESL Music. The deluxe edition features include five exclusive new remixes, including “Cara de Yo No Fui” by ESL mates and LIAS favorites Ancient Astronauts (read our interview with the Astronauts here), a hip-hop rhythm remix of “Vendendo Saude e Fe” by Adrian Quesada himself, a Tony Questions remix of “Electric Cockroach”, a music video, and a digital booklet.
Good when apart, the duo are fantastic together as they produce headbobbing worldbeats that run the gamut from cumbia to funk to psychedelic afrobeat to guitar-driven folk, always churning forward with an ever-present, inescapable rhythm. Something about them reminds me of a mid-day street party in Rio — spontaneous, unexpected, sweaty, and fun as hell. But enough talk — peep their track “Revolt of the Cockroach People” below to get a sample, and then continue reading their interview. Funny thing is they were interviewed separately, yet answer many of the questions eerily similar — lots of studio obsessiveness and familial ties. It’s pretty evident Martín Perna and Adrian Quesada got some weird connection. If you like what you hear, buy it off iTunes here.
PS: If you’re in New York this month, Antibalas (aka Martín Pern) has a residency every Thursday this December at Brooklyn’s Knitting Factory. Check ’em out if you’re in town…
