A Festival of Rare and Hard To See Films hits Culver City

Wow this looks awesome. Roberts & Tilton present the Projections film festival starting tomorrow (Saturday, January 16th) — billed as a “A Festival of Rare and Hard To See Films”. It begins its run in Los Angeles at their Culver City gallery with an opening reception from 6-9 pm. The festival is curated by Aaron Rose — the director of Beautiful Losers, a film about a bunch of the guys involved in this festival — and highlights rare works of 31 of the more far-out filmmakers of our time. This looks to be quite the doozy.

Films include Spike Jonze’s We Were Once A Fairytale (starring Kanye West), Harmony Korine’s Mak & Plak (about “two Siamaese brothers [who] berate each other over and over while a man with a prosthetic face masturbates and attempts to have sex with a refrigerator”…ummm, ok…), and Roman Coppola & Bucky Fukumoto’s 10 Things You Can Do To The Earth (According To Satan). Film lengths range widely from Mike Mills’ one-minute short Bummer to Jean Luc Godard’s 85-minute experimental feature Slow Motion, though most tend towards the quickies.

Admission is free, but no tickets will be issued and seating is limited. Films are screened on a continuous basis daily from 11am to 6pm. A complete list of the filmmakers and their films can be found here, while schedules (and a downloadable version) can be found here. If you live in LA, do yourself a favor and check out at least a couple nights.

Per Aaron Rose:

“Some of the most inspiring films I’ve ever seen have been under five minutes long. Projections is a celebration of these types of works…Additionally, it is my hope that by removing all these films from their usual theatrical setting, and instead presenting them in an art gallery context, that people will perhaps look at them a little differently. Not just as entertainment, but as the works of true artists, who contribute greatly to the visual culture of our times.”
