Kenneth James Gibson is one of Los Angeles’ most prolific house producers. Guy has more production aliases than you can shake a stick at, including Premature Wig, dubLoner, Reverse Commuter, Eight Frozen Modules and [a]ppendics.shuffle, and his work has graced some of the top labels in dance music today. Hallucination, Adjunct, Leftroom, Superfreq, Trapez and Persistencebit have all pressed his tracks, while underground heavyweights like Luciano, Mr C. and Damian Lazarus have all sung his praise. It’s a bit of a surprise that it took him so long to start recording under his true name, but that’s what he’s done for LA label Culprit, run by the Droog DJ trio. His debut EP as Kenneth James Gibson came out last year via Culprit, and his debut LP for the label, Delusional Talens and Non-Silence, hits in the coming weeks. Both deliver the blueprint for his late night, tribal, driving and twisted sound — or as he himself has put it: “spacey, druggy shit”. Check him out in person, no-doubt armed with several beverages, at the Culprit Sessions monthly residency at The Downtown Standard Rooftop on August 9. Meanwhile download the track ‘Painted Eyes’ for a little taster, and LIAS gets to know him a little more intimately after the Jump…
Something In The Way (Extended Mix In 3 Passages) by Kenneth James Gibson
“I make music for late night driving in the cold winter down the freeway in the Canadian Rockies while sipping codeine and watching snow hit the windshield…”
Allow me to introduce myself, I’m…
Kenneth James Gibson also known as [a]pendics.shuffle, Reverse Commuter, dubLoner, KJ Gibbs, Kenneth James G., Premature Wig, Bal Cath, Eight Frozen Modules and half of Cascabel Gentz, Men In Slippers, Whoa Buck, Electronic Music Composer, Hiss and Buzz, and Bell Gardens.
You can find me in…
Echo Park, California.
I’m usually posted up at…
My studio.
I pay my bills by…
Making and playing music.
You might’ve heard of me because…
Aside of music making nuttiness, I run the label Adjunct.
But why you really should know me is…
I make a variety of music and sounds to shake your poopoo maker and bounce those boobies to OR to sleep like a baby and cry yourself awake, or even for late night driving in the cold winter down the freeway in the Canadian Rockies while sipping codeine and watching snow hit the windshield.
My next order of business is…
The Kenneth James Gibson Full Length Delusional Talens and Non-Silence out ASAP on Culprit. Also — the next series of dubLoner remixes on Adjunct, the next [a]pendics.shuffle on Mo’s Ferry Prod., the next Reverse Commuter on Hallucination Ltd., The next Cascabel Gentz on Trapez, the next dubLoner and Isaac Haile Selassie on De’fchild as well as the next Bell Gardens on Failed Better / Darla.
If it wasn’t for being a music obsessed, crazy under-educated fool I wouldn’t be where I am today.
The best part about my job is…
Making music and watching what people do to it…. or with it.
The worst part about this job is…
Watching people use other people for their skills and make money off them without any true credit or real respect.
If I was taking a train from Paris to Madrid, and I could choose one person to share the cabin with, I’d choose….
My lady….preferably naked with a rose in her ass and a smile on her face.
The first piece of music I heard that I remember waking up my ears was…
The Butthole Surfers “Rembrandt Pussyhorse” and RUN-DMC’s “King Of Rock”
The last piece of music I heard that woke up my ears is….
Jack Nitzsche, “I’m the Loneliest Fool”.
If you want to put a smile on my face, you probably want to…
Play me the song “Fly” by J.K. and Co.
If you want to wipe that smile away, then you should….
Talk to me about the lame and trendy people out there without a clue.
The last time I saw the sun come up I was…
At Superfreq in London last weekend with Mr. C….amazing.
The person I admire most is…
Hunter S. Thompson for staying to true to the game.
The last time I lied was because….
I probably really didn’t want to something someone else wanted me to do.
If you hit shuffle on my iPod you might be shocked to find….
Joni Mitchell’s Court and Spark album.
If you hit shuffle on my iPod I’d be embarrassed if it landed on….
The pictures my girlfriend took of my long balls.
When I get my next really big check, I’m gonna go score a…
New big monitor….seriously, I need one!
But it’ll never replace…
The shitty monitor on my lap top.
My one magic power is…
Making the gods believe me when I say there is a way.
I’d like to give a quick shout-out to…
The REAL people….the TRUE people….you know who you are. I love you.
And lastly, If I was Lost In a Supermarket, you’d find me….
Probably in the medicine isle scoring some Nyquil.
