Wild Nothing's Jack Tatum turns nothing into something wild

Wild Nothing is the musical vehicle of Blacksburg, Virginia’s Jack Tatum, and it’s justifiably finding its way to music lovers through their debut album Gemini, which was released May 25th on Captured Tracks. The band’s sound has been described as “dreamy, carefree synth-pop songs that linger with an inexplicable sense of regret”, jumpstarted with a synthetic vibe and rich melodies. You can hear the range and potential of Jack Tatum in songs such as “Confirmation”, a track that radio desperately needs. On Gemini, Tatum’s frail vocals come warped in an oozing neon haze — just check out “Chinatown” below, and see if it’s your cup of tea. Carefully orchestrated synth-pop arrangements, trebly guitar riffs and tattered drum machines blend together to create an intriguing, texturally rich glo-pop album that could come only from the young at heart. If you dig it, pick Gemini up on iTunes here, and peep our Q&A with Tatum after the Jump to find out a little more of the kid behind the sound…

“I don’t really lie — is that weird?”

Allow me to introduce myself, I’m…
Jack Tatum, or Wild Nothing

You can find me…
Blacksburg, VA

I’m usually posted up at…
Not really anywhere to hang out in Blacksburg haha. Mostly just go out to eat and hang out at friends places.

I pay my bills by…
Well I worked in a coffee shop for a while but I stopped doing that so I don’t really have a job.

You might’ve heard of me because…
My Wild Nothing tunes.

My next order of business is…
Well probably just more tunes, more touring, more records.

If it wasn’t for _______ I wouldn’t be where I am today
MySpace luck catching Captured Tracks attention.

The best part about my job is…
Not sure I can call this my job yet. Usually you have to make money for something to be a job ha.

The worst part about my job is…
Can’t complain! My e-mail inbox is really messy these days. I guess that kind of sucks.

If I was taking a train from Paris to Madrid, and I could choose one person to share the cabin with, I’d choose….
Harry Potter. But only if we can pretend we are going to Hogwarts.

The first piece of music I heard that I remember waking up my ears was…
Well according to my parents the first song I ever really liked was “Losing My Religious” by R.E.M. which is weird because I’m not really into R.E.M. at all. Guess it may have woken up my ears to something though.

The last piece of music I heard that woke up my ears is…
Just the other day my girlfriend and I were listening to a mixtape that Ariel Pink made and one of the songs was this old Sumatran folk/pop song called “Indang Pariaman” by Samsimar. I haven’t been listening to anything else since. It sounds like a baby is singing it.

Tatum’s latest obsession, “Indang Pariaman” by Samsimar

If you want to put a smile on my face, you probably want to…
Feed me something delicious. Recently all my friends have been learning really awful jokes. Awful as in bad, not shocking. They provide entertainment for longer than they should.

The last time I saw the sun come up I was…
I think I was probably driving to New York really early in the morning. Usually I’m nowhere near awake when the sun rises.

The person I admire most is…
I mean musically I idolize Johnny Marr probably. In my everyday life I think I just try to be a good person and model my decisions off of the good ones my parents have made.

The last time I lied was because…
I don’t really lie — is that weird?

If you hit shuffle on my iPod you might be shocked to find…
Hm, I don’t know. I’m a big MF Doom fan. I also have a lot of leftovers from when I was young. Like Cursive and Saves The Day or whatever. I don’t care, I still listen to a lot of that stuff in the car. Its good driving music.

If you hit shuffle on my iPod I’d be embarrassed if it landed on…
Doubt I’d get super embarrassed about anything except maybe some of my own older songs.

When I get my next really big check, I’m gonna go score a…
It’s probably dorky that the only stuff I can think of wanting is music related, but I’d probably just buy a stupid amount of vintage synthesizers and recording equipment. Damn thats really boring, ok I would buy a motorcycle with a side car that my dog can sit in. But first I need to buy a dog so I would get a dog too.

But it’ll never replace…
I already have my dream amp, Vox AC30. I wouldn’t replace that, especially since it took me a while to be able to buy it.

My one magic power is…
Hmmmm.

I’d like to give a quick shout-out to…
Ha ha. Um, hi mom, dad, Katie, Coleman, all my Blacksburg buddies.

And lastly, If I was Lost In a Supermarket, you’d find me in the…
Oh man. That’s really hard. Probably not any aisle but that giant cheese island, you know? I have a feeling I’ll be a cheese snob when I get older and have nothing better to do.
