Juan James is the moniker for the collaboration between Chilean-born New York artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz and New York artist and musician J. Carlton Dewoody. Together they created these two limited edition skateboards — called the Burka Board and Prayer Board — which are to be exhibited and auctioned off for a charity called Skateistan. The idea behind Skateistan is to teach troubled kids from Afghanistan how to skateboard. The Skateistan US entity just held its first major exhibition and fundraising event in New York at the Red Bull Soho Space, with nearly 70 customized boards on display by more than 50 artists. Now the boards are all available for auction on eBay. Fully 100% of the final bids will go directly towards Skateistan’s efforts to provide skateboarding and educational opportunities to the boys and girls of Afghanistan. I love the idea of hordes of Afghanistan youth learning to skate, its one of those things that could revolutionize a culture from the inside out. First they’re skating, next watching Jackass and videos, and before you know it you’ve made friends with the “enemy”. [I’m not suggesting that all of Afghanistan is our enemy, but certainly certain factions feel that way.] Plus I dig the graphics of the Burka Board, very clever…
