We were lucky enough to discover Jimmy Edgar back in 2008, thanks to our hometown party luminaries DROID BEHAVIOR. It was 2am on the 2nd floor of a crumbling warehouse in downtown Los Angeles, in a suffocated room of about 75 sweaty, frenzied future-music enthusiasts. The scene was a perfect complement to the exquisite sounds that had us hooked that night forward. Since then, we’ve asked Jimmy to lay down his hometown of Detroit for our Coordinates series, and now we’re stoked to offer our take on his new LP out on Germany’s lauded !K7 Records. XXX sounds both futuristic and nostalgic at the same time. Like most intelligent albums, Edgar’s latest proves difficult to classify — it’s funk, it’s dub, it’s new wave, it’s electro. But the overall take on the album? Sexy, if not straight up seedy. A delicious layer of jarring beats and unsettled tempos, colored with warm flushes of keyboards and Zapp-like vocals. This album exudes that raw electro funk styling championed by another Midwest music maverick (you know, The Purple One). Jimmy Edgar is currently taking his one-man-show (live vocals, synths, and visuals – all crafted by the man himself) on tour  to support the release.  If you’re in LA, check him out tonight at the Central S.A.P.C. in Santa Monica.
