'Luohkka' headstones by Johan Kauppi
Swedish designer Johan Kauppi creates these fascinating headstone designs named Luohkka, which apparently means “small mountain with trees” in Sami. The concept is that a small cut circular space, not unlike a flowerpot, can be used for planting seeds in the soil beneath. The design really emphasizes the idea of life and remembrance a loved one through an object that is so fully associated with mortality. To grow a plant is an amazing act of nurturing, and there are plenty of tree and plant types that would grow within the small space provided — creating sapling life through death. Produced by the company Naturstensbolaget, the headstones are made entirely from magnetite, a durable type of stone found in Kiruna, Sweden.
