Quite a day for Italian supercars

Quite a day for Italian supercars, altho for as much of a marketing ploy as the cosmetically altered Lamborghini Bicolore was, Pagani’s new Huayra is the polar opposite — it’s a brand new ultra supercar, a 7-years-in-the-making racing machine worthy of the torrential drool already spilled at Autoblog and Jalopnik this morning. The esteemed Italian manufacturer has a long history of world class vehicles, including the Zonda R and Zonda Cinque, so you know when they release a car it’s not gonna be a superfluous marketing gimmick. Sporting a 6.0-liter  Mercedes Benz AMG-built twin-turbo V12 engine, the Huayra boasts over 700 horsepower (and roughly 740 pound-feet of torque) while catapulting to speeds upwards of 230 mph. But due to its svelte figure — thanks to a healthy diet of carbon fiber — Pagani’s latest supermodel weighs in at under 3,000 lbs… or about half of a Rolls Royce Phantom. Eschewing the latest craze of AWD cars, Pagani is channeling all that power through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to the rear wheels, which is insanity. It also features an all-new carbon-titanium monocoque chassis with beautiful gull-wing doors that elevate the vehicle’s “wing” inspiration to a new level. But unlike many supercars of this ilk, Pagani is not cutting corners on premium amenities to save valuable weight — the inside of the Huayra is downright luxurious. The cockpit is fully wrapped in full grain leather, including the steering wheel which houses all primary functions, paddle shifters and all. The leather is nicely highlighted with exposed carbon fiber and a Swiss watch-inspired aluminum panel, all lit up with glowing blue gauges. But perhaps the most striking feature on the Huayra are its gaping front air intakes, giving the car the appearance that it’s going to actually eat the asphalt before it. The shape is necessary, however, to keep the car’s dramatic wing shape from catching air. Can’t wait to see this one in action…
