The same technology used in John Mayer’s “Heartbreak Warfare” music video can now be yours with the Augmented Reality Cinema App for iPhone users. The new app allows users to travel wherever and view various popular scenes from their favorite movies shot in their exact location. I may not get to the movies as much as I used to but this idea is a game changer. I can’t be the only one that drives or walks by a place and thinks that it looks familiar, only to realize that a particular building or street was used in a movie I saw recently. It’s happened to me countless times and I’m sure had I had this app, it would’ve made for a surreal moment. Whether you’re strolling the streets of New York City and find yourself tuned into a scene from Taxi Driver or you’re in Los Angeles heading towards James’ Beach to grab a taco and find yourself watching a clip from I Love You, Man, it seems like the surprises won’t led up. Full disclosure: Since the Augmented Reality Cinema App is only in conception and development, we haven’t actually seen it work — as of now we still don’t know how it searches for scenes, tags where you are in a given location or even searches for movies that were filmed near your current location. But we don’t really care; if the video is even close to how it really will work, it’s worth checking out. Film studios might be upset for copyright issues, but if they’re smart they’d see this as an opportunity to spark viewers’ desire to buy the DVD. So, you want to stroll through your city and take a break from your boring life while inspiring what you want to watch with your lady tonight? Yeah, there’s definitely an app for that.
