HBO may best be known for stellar primetime shows like Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and Curb Your Enthusiasm, but it’s their documentaries about fringe life in America that presently have the world intrigued. In their latest award winning doc, Superheroes, director Michael Barnett explores the world of real-life caped crusaders on a mission to fight evil in the streets. Frank Castle, Matt Murdock and Bruce Wayne make room: these ballsy men and women are in the world of actual crime fighting — well, in their heads at least — and they have no plans to retire back to their parent’s basement anytime soon. Just like the subjects of that Imposters book, there is something both headscratching and inspiring about these people, self-prescribed vigilantes like The Conundrum, Master Legend and Mr. Xtreme (totally serious) who drive around town in their “Supermobile” Corvettes, green costumes and “Iron Fists”, mistakenly tasering themselves in the buttocks. It is an absolutely mindboggling world. Take a look at the trailer below, and tune into the premiere of Superheroes this Monday, August 8th on HBO.
