From the deranged mind of Enrique Gomez de Molina we are treated to animals that look like malevolent pets plucked from the hellish fires of the underworld. The taxidermist stitches together a menagerie of animals into ones we could only dream of… or more likely, have sweat-inducing nightmares about. With names like “Sunday Morning”, “Crabby” and “WTF?” you have to wonder if the name came first or the creation. The chimera like breeds are abominations of nature — sprouting bird-like beaks with fur and feather pelts, and the crab-like legs of arthropods. Not only is the imagination of Gomez de Molina’s work stunning, but the craftsmanship with which he assembles his monsters is superlative — you can almost see them running across the dioramas of some alien Natural History Museum. “The impossibility of my creatures brings me both joy and sadness at the same time,” explains Gomez. “The joy comes from seeing and experiencing the Fantasy of the work but that is coupled with the sadness of the fact that we are destroying all of these beautiful things.” I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder…
