Can you begin to imagine what wondrous mysteries of nature and physics you’ll be able to witness when Vision Research’s new Phantom v1610 high-speed video camera gets into the hands of the right artist or researcher? With 1 million frames per second, we’re talking about capturing physical actions that take place infinitely quicker than the blink of an eye, with mindblowing time intervals. The only bummer to the camera is the resolution at 1-mill FPS — it would have a 128 x 16 resolution — but at a full HD resolution of 1280 x 800, you can capture 16,000 FPS, which is still game-changing (unfortunately without exterior hard drive, you’ll fill up the memory at that rate in less than 5 seconds). But let’s stick with the 1-mill FPS for now: sure the image would be small or blurry, but there is the potential here to unlock many long-standing physical mysteries. After all, it took early slow motion cameras for scientists to discern the accurate wing motion of a hummingbird in flight, so who knows what else may be discovered with the Phantom v1610? One thing we still don’t know: the price. My guess? Lots.
