Karma's Shooting Brake cousin debuts at Frankfurt Motor Show

By now you should now know about Fisker Automotive, a California-based independent startup founded by premier designer Henrik Fisker — best known for penning the gorgeous Aston Martin DB9, V8 Vantage and BMW Z8. But unlike most startup auto companies, Fisker actually has a chance of succeeding — first because it’s executive board is loaded with veterans from the auto industry, second because its design is miles ahead of the competition, third because it’s military technology is capable, and lastly because it received a $600 million alternative energy loan from the US government to go into production (more than Tesla, much to their chagrin and amazement, received). Now the third car in their lineup was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show: the five-door wagon/hatchback Surf. Based heavily on the Karma, its shooting brake silhouette may remind many of the upcoming Ferrari FF, but keep in mind it has rear doors. Fisker sees the Surf as a crossover between a sport car and a station wagon — adding lifestyle space to a car (the Karma) that offers an impossibly meager  7.1 cubic feet of trunk space (batteries and hybrid drivetrain take up a lot of room). “The Surf is a first-of-its-kind eco-friendly lifestyle vehicle that offers space, performance and luxury design for people who live an active, environmentally conscious lifestyle and like to drive beautiful cars,” explains Henrik Fisker, CEO and Design Director of the company that bears his name. The Surf can run up 50 miles running exclusively on electric EV power with zero emmissions. Should you need to drive further, its turbocharged four cylinder engine will power up and charge the batteries for a 300 mile total range. But this is no Nissan Leaf — the car can actually perform, its two electric motors capable of delivering 403 horsepower to the rear wheels, with a 0-60 clip of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 125 mph — not bad for a wagon, especially a potentially zero emission wagon. No price has yet been announced, but expect it to hover a bit above the Karma’s $100,000 pricetag.
