Ambitious brands must expand, that’s just what they do, so it’s little surprise to see Bentley follow in the footsteps of one-time exclusive car builders such as Porsche, Audi and recently Maserati leaping into the SUV segment. This EXP 9 F SUV Concept, which premiered today at the Geneva International Auto Show, gives a good idea of what the venerable British marque will enter into the highly competitive ultra-luxury SUV market with. Borrowing styling cues from its massive flagship Mulsanne vehicle, the EXP 9 F Concept SUV‘s design is highlighted by a signature Bentley matrix grille, 23″ bespoke wheels, round headlamps and strong rear haunches. Inside you are greeted with a pampered cocoon of diamond-quilted soft-touch leather, silk wool floormats (which can reverse to durable, ribbed saddle leather should the trail turn dirty), copious wood trim, brushed gunmetal and aluminum accents, massive touchscreen display/infotainment system, a drinking table and a rear armrest concealing a chilled compartment for champagne and glasses. All this spread out under a flowing roof design with sweeping panoramic glass inspired by rally car roll cages. Passengers can decide to either sit back and enjoy the entertainment, or get to work with fold-down keyboards and internet connectivity via iPad or tablet PC. Perhaps most indulgent, however, is the two-piece tailgate that can be used as a viewing bench or picnic table. Bespoke picnic hampers are stowed to either side accessible via rails for easy access, with an actual awning extending over the tailgate to protect against inclement weather. Heaven forbid you get wet while enjoying the Great Outdoors, after all. But even if things get messy and you find yourself knee deep in mud, the EXP 9 F Concept’s 600+ horsepower W12 6.0 liter twin-turbo — mated to a 8-speed automatic transmission — should get you free pretty easily. As it is only a concept, no word yet on price.
