Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees & Jimi

I loved Singles. It actually got me my first girlfriend. She was gorgeous, way out of my league — especially since I was a long-haired hesher. But while watching Singles she — being a fairly conservative girl from the Midwest — realized that one could actually date a guy with long hair and listened to metal, that there was a place in these wacky cosmos for those types of shenanigans. And that night after watching the movie, sitting on a dark Westwood balcony, we hooked up. The rest is history. I am indebted to Cameron Crowe ever since. Apparently, Telephoned shares similar affection for the 1992 Seattle/grunge film, and have recorded a new EP inspired by the film — and more specifically, by the film’s landmark soundtrack. Highlighting four of the soundtrack’s best songs (among the best songs of the early 90s), Telephoned re-interprets the music of Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees and Jimi Hendrix, all re-purposed over Canadian producer Ryan Hemsworth’s beats. The classic grunge tracks are transmuted into moody, bittersweet R&B-esque slow jams in the process. Download the whole thing here, or just stream it below. If you want to catch Telephoned live for FREE, check them out at Public Assembly in Brooklyn tonight (Thursday 11/29).
