Acclaimed illustrator and animation designer Nik Dudukovic will be having his first California-based exhibit this month at the Scion AV space. Opening tomorrow, January 11th, The Secret Clubhouse exhibit will show the Toronto artist’s work in all its cartoony, nostalgic glory. As Dudukovic explains:
“Utilitarian quality goods that honor the history of clubhouses — their implied elegance, exclusivity and strange juxtaposition of forms — create the greatest disquiet. The goal with my installation is to create items that stand on their own as accessible limited products, yet work together as a package as well. I would like to create a fictional clubhouse, with items that are given as a package to its members, such as jackets, Zippos, hats, notebooks, etc. Everything that would belong to the initiated.”
A series of paintings inspired by the items (and their graphics) will also be produced. For all who don’t know, Scion AV Installation is an art/retail space on Melrose that hosts a different artist or brand each month, wherein they create a wholly new environment showcasing their work. New merchandise is created specifically for the space for each exhibit, with the artists keeping 100% of all sales of both merchandise and art. The Scion AV Installation already can claim a highly successful 2013 run with exhibits by such high bar artists as Sage Vaughn, SSUR, Gluekit, Hood By Air, Clot (collaborations with Basquiat, KAWS, Nike, Converse, Curtis Kulig, Been Trill, etc), Nuge/Vol 4, Jermaine Rogers, and more. The Nik Dudukovic’s The Secret Clubhouse will be the first show for 2014.
The opening reception requires RSVP and takes place tomorrow (January 11, 2014) from 7-10pm at Scion AV Installation: 7667 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046. This exhibition is on view from January 11 – February 1, 2014. The reception is all ages and open to the public with RSVP.
