The duo of Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez return for the followup to their surprisingly good Sin City. What was surprising wasn’t that the original comic could be the template for a good film, it’s just that rarely is a comic book so loyally adapted to the silver screen. Using Miller’s actual comic frames to storyboard the movie, Rodriguez was so diligent in his homage that he ended up crediting Miller as a co-director. That cost him his membership in the Director’s Guild, as they objected to the non-union Miller receiving said credit. Gotta give him respect for that. It also resulted in Rodriguez making the best film of his career. Based on the original comic, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For again repeats the trick of casting an amazing stable of talent — including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Brolin, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Eva Green, Jaime King, Powers Boothe, Mickey Rourke, Ray Liotta, Stacy Keach, Bruce Willis and even Lady Gaga. On top of the A Dame to Kill For comic, the sequel also adapts Just Another Saturday Night and two more short comic noir tales written by Frank Miller specifically for the film. Oh, and special shout-out for using The Glitch Mob’s “Can’t Kill Us”, the first track off their new Love Death Immortality album, as the trailer’s soundtrack. Look out for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For‘s release date of August 22, 2014.
