It’s a sad day for American muscle lineage, as it was announced this week that Dodge would cease making its iconic Viper. Everyone could see this coming as Chrysler fell into deeper and deeper financial woes, but it’s still hard to say goodbye to such a singular American vehicle. Since the day the Viper first surfaced, it has been a testament to all things overpowered, undercontrolled and ridiculously ostentatious — in every way, the perfect American car. To celebrate this closing of a chapter, Chrysler has created the 50 Final Edition models, which will literally be the final 50 Vipers ever built (only 32 of which will remain in the US). There will be 20 Final Edition Coupes, 18 Roadsters and 12 track-ready ACRs, but all will come in only one color, Graphite, with a black center stripe outlined in red. As of right now the 50 Final Edition’s will use Viper’s standard mammoth 8.4-liter V-10 engine which generates 600 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque, which of course is phenomenal — although seeing as it’s the last of the breed, one would think Dodge/Chrysler would modify the engine to make it something more special under the hood, not just a signature paint job. It is precisely these types of clumsy mistakes and shortcutting techniques that landed Chrysler in these dire straights to begin with, you’d think they’d learn on their way down…
