A very interesting TED talk with Irish magician Keith Barry discussing “brain magic”. Now this dates back to 2008, but it’s no less compelling today. Actually, it’s pretty brilliant — like Penn & Teller, only slightly more enlightening. “First, Keith Barry shows us how our brains can fool our bodies…Then he involves the audience in some jaw-dropping (and even a bit dangerous) feats of brain magic,” explains the TED page. “Think of Keith Barry as a hacker of the human brain — writing routines that exploit its bugs and loopholes, and offering a revealing look at the software between our ears.” While that’s an apt description, Barry never actually delves into explaining how he’s fooling your mind, he just shows you that indeed your mind has been fooled. Which is good and all, but illuminating exactly how the brain has been fooled seems pretty essential to the entire point of “hacking” our brains. A great talk, altho a little more revelation would be appreciated…

The extent to which peoples brains can fool them is pretty incredible, and in most cases there is no way for someone to realize it happened to them.
