Although legendary Bauhaus architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was originally given sole credit for designing the Barcelona Chair — one of the most famous and timeless icons of modernist furniture — only recently has co-credit been given to his longtime partner, the architect/designer Lilly Reich. Designed specifically for the German Pavilion in the 1929 Barcelona World Fair, the contemporary version of the Barcelona Chair features cowhide instead of ivory pigskin, and now uses stainless steel for its frame. The version above, sold by the Lollipop Shoppe for about $7,400 (£4,572), is constructed of 40 individual panels of hand cut leather belting straps. Thought to be inspired by Roman folding chairs known as Curule seats for Roman aristocracy, the Barcelona Chair broke from its Bauhaus contemporaries in that it was not designed specifically for the “common man”, but instead for Spanish Royalty attending the World Fair. At $7,400 a pop for single chair — even one as aesthetically pure as the the Barcelona Chair — it’s clear the chair remains for the elite class. Save your pennies, it can’t help make your life more complete.
