Porsche’s 911 is one of the longest continually running car models, and is without a doubt one of the most iconic bloodlines in the history of the automobile. The mid-engined sports car was originally unveiled in Frankfurt as the 901 at the 1963 IAA International Automotive Show, and was hitting public roads as early as the following year — now as the newly coined “911”. As can be expected, the German automaker plans to celebrate the 911’s half-century mark with the pageantry fit for a king. First off, the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart will exhibit four landmark automobiles: an early 911 Turbo Coupe, a 1981 911 Cabriolet concept, a 1997 911 GT1 and a Type 754 T7 (an early 911 prototype). Next, from June 4th til September 29th the Museum will exhibit the far-ranging 50 Years of the Porsche 911 exhibit, an elaborate affair promising to show the entire life of its legendary speedster. Finally, Porsche is going to send a vintage 1967 911 on a world tour and document its travels as it stops off at international events such as the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Much to look forward to regarding Porsche this year, we’ll be looking out.
