I woke up today bored and almost annoyed with my current electronic music library. That seems like so long ago now. After my coffee and shower, I went through the appropriate channels of information to acquire 3 new albums — one of which was Animal Collective’s newest LP. I’ll try not to be heavy handed with my critique of Merriweather Post Pavillion but, I have to admit that I’ve just finished listening to it for the third time in a row. I’ve been hyped on the release of this album for months and honestly I’m baffled by the outcome. This new record is truly difficult to liken to anything else musically speaking. It’s much more like an acid trip or an out of body experience. Though it does have the feeling of their previous records, it’s augmented by a pop-like and I’d even go so far to say a “sing along” feel. Merriweather has a much richer recording than that of their previous album Feels (2005) and it has less of that noisy/tribal feeling than Sung Tongs (2004). This album trailblazes sonically to the heart of the bands’ imagination and influence to produce an instant classic. The albums’ first single, “My Girls” is jawdroppingly pretty with a beat worthy of most dancefloors — think the Beach Boys meeting up with Steve Reich and Diplo on an African safari.  I hate to be a dork but even the cover art is fucking incredible (it moves). Anyways…. Get this album and go see them on their world tour.

For my Angelino readers: they play today (1/23 @ Henry Fonda) which I’ll attending (YAY!!) and Saturday (1/24 @ Troubadour), so try to hustle some tickets or throw down $150+ on eBay. That lousy bastard Madman Mundt will see them tomorrow, expect to hear what we think about both shows… Till then check out these tracks.

A taste of “Taste”…You can almost drown in Panda Bear’s love of Brian Wilson…

One Response to “Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavillion”

  1. Remember, here’s a quote that says, “Show me a man with a tattoo and I’ll show you a man with an interesting past”. That’s part of the reason that I have tattoos.
