Given the gloomy predictions for the autoworld in 2009, I thought Detroit’s NAIAS would be bereft of relevant debuts. Not so. Sure, the atmosphere was restrained and the showroom at times dismally vacant, but there were still plenty of cars to keep it interesting.
Fisker unveiled its Sunset, which is a 2-door Karma convertible, yesterday to much fanfare. The Karma is already the most beautiful “green” vehicle out there, so it’s no shocker that the Sunset is a total headturner. It shares the Karma’s Q-Drive drivetrain, whose lithium ion battery runs 50 emmission-free miles between charges. Then, its gasoline generator kicks in and powers the electric engine, while recharging the battery. So gas is never used to actually turn the wheels, it just generates electricity for the electric motor. These plug-in hybrids allow the average commuter to drive without ever using any gas (assuming you charge it every night), while still allowing for stress-free weekend trips to Vegas .
The Lincoln Concept C below boats vast interior space — not by making the car longer, however, but by making it deceptively wide. It can fit 3 adults in the back, side-by-side. It also debuts Ford’s HMI technology, which uses your phone to access GPS, music, contacts, internet (radio), make calls, etc. It seems like a cheap way to let your phone do all the work, but in this post-iPhone reality all it does is save you the expense of paying for a private service for all the above. Its 1.6L EcoBoost engine averages 43 mpg while still outputting a respectable 180-horsepower.

Check out that hinge…
The Volvo S60 Concept…
More crazy hinge-work…
I dig the transparent dashboard…
The Camaro Black Edition, which debuted at SEMA. It’s not an official edition per se (yet, anyway), but a stunning combo of modifications: matte black hood, red LED-rimmed headlamps, suede interior, blacked-out rims, etc. Just nasty. This is the car the Punisher would drive…if he were real…and the car were real…

The VW BlueSport Roadster Concept. This mid-engined roadster has remarkable fuel economy (42 mpg / 50 mpg highway) and low-emissions (113 g/km CO2) — both lower than any sports car…
