It is a sad day in Los Angeles radio — naye, LA music — as Indie 103 shuttered its broadcast airwaves. It’s truly a bummer, and I guess we all should’ve seen it coming, as LA has it had far too good for far too long (as compared to the rest of the country). What with KCRW, the relaunched KDAY and our beloved Indie 103 (and even, I’ll admit it, Jack FM), us Angelos had it pretty sweet. In this Clear (Your Mind) Channel day-and-age, tho, that should’ve had all our Spidey senses tingling. From their website:
Indie 103.1 will cease broadcasting over this frequency effective immediately. Because of changes in the radio industry and the way radio audiences are measured, stations in this market are being forced to play too much Britney, Puffy and alternative music that is neither new nor cutting edge. Due to these challenges, Indie 103.1 was recently faced with only one option — to play the corporate radio game. We have decided not to play that game any longer. Rather than changing the sound, spirit, and soul of what has made Indie 103.1 great, Indie 103.1 will bid farewell to the terrestrial airwaves and take an alternative course.”
The alternative course will be internet-only radio, to be found at HERE. (www.indie1031.com) I’m not sure if the great Jonesy’s Jukebox will remain in the internet line-up, but I assume most of Indie’s other great shows (Big Sonic Heaven, Check One… Two, Neon Neon, Metal Show, et al) will. Guess I gotta find a new station to save on my car’s #3 radio slot…
